During lockdown of 2020, Leah Stewart founded Kidney Donor Whānau, a support group for New Zealand kidney donors to connect through social media, as well as a buddy support program. Leah approached Kidney Health New Zealand with the idea, who supported her to get the project off the ground. After volunteering her time to pursue this initiative, Kidney Health New Zealand offered Leah a part-time position based in Christchurch to use her KDW model to establish other social media support groups within the renal community.
"I founded Kidney Donor Whānau to help fellow donors around New Zealand and I was really excited when Kidney Health New Zealand came along to help. It's really great how KHNZ helped me with something I was really passionate about, and even more exciting that it led to further work with them. I'm really excited to be able to use my skills from school and university to apply to this project, my new role, and future roles I may have." - Leah
